Top 5 Reasons to Stay Away from the Cleaners Your Mom Used... If You Want to Live a Long and Healthy Life
It is shocking how harmful those cleaners still are TODAY!... and the big corporations don't want us to know.
Top 5 Reasons to Stay Away from Traditional Cleaning Products:
1. Indoor air is often more polluted than outdoor air yet we spend more time indoors. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ranks poor indoor air quality among the top five environmental risks to public health. … Cleaning products generate some of that pollution.
2. Some chemicals in cleaning products have been linked to reproductive harm, which includes changes in sexual behavior, decreases in fertility, menstrual changes, changes in the onset of puberty, cancers of reproductive organs, miscarriage, premature birth and other effects.
3. Fragrances spell danger. While scientists have known for a long time that high levels of exposure to some chemicals can be linked to certain chronic diseases, research now suggests that even minute traces affect processes like gene activation, hormone production and brain development in newborns.
4. Babies and kid's exposure to chemicals are higher than adults generally because they breathe more often and more deeply, and consume more food and water per pound of body weight than adults. An astronomical increase in asthma among preschool-aged children is happening (160% in 14 years).
5. Survey in California demonstrated that participating consumers falsely believed they were protected. 76% agreed with the statement, “Current regulations require chemical companies to provide information about the health impacts of the chemicals they create.” A majority also believed chemicals are tested to make sure they are safe to use.”
Bottom Line? Stay clear of traditional cleaning chemicals – or at least as much as possible.
Rae Ann Dougherty, an accomplished Environmental Engineer who is thriving as a cleaning professional, believes less is more as we continue are exposed to more and more chemicals that are toxic and unhealthy. Her new CleansGreen™ line provides safe, non-toxic, and even some chemical free options.
“Our Mom taught us how to clean and what to clean with. In fact we were brought up to associate the Pine-Sol® and bleach smells with “clean.” Unfortunately these familiar fragrances are what is killing us … slowly,” she said.
Furthermore Anna Lappé, a national bestselling author and one of TIME’s “Eco-Who’s Who,” reminds us that “Every time you spend money you are casting a vote for the kind of world you want.”
CleansGreen™ products is not just for homemakers like herself. “CleansGreen™ is about freeing the world of toxic chemicals one building at a time,” Dougherty says. Cleaning product manufacturers are constantly adding fragrance-laden products; I’m taking away. CleansGreen™ is about eliminating harmful chemicals all together.
Unfortunately advertisements and product labels fail to mention that many cleaning products contain chemicals that may actually be harmful to our health. Fragrances are one of those chemicals. The fragrances created for cosmetics, personal care and cleaning products, are predominantly comprised of synthetic, rather than natural ingredients. Furthermore those synthetic chemicals are known or suspected neurotoxins, carcinogens, or reproductive or developmental toxicants. Sadly, U.S. manufacturers can legally hide the details and ingredients of the “fragrance” as a “trade secret.” This excuse to not label fragrance ingredients was initiated in an era when the major fragrance houses lobbied to protect their secret formulas made from flowers and oils. But those days are long gone. What the government is protecting now are manufacturers who have a license to poison the American public with more than 3,000 chemicals that are being absorbed, inhaled, and ingested daily.
In truth more than 95% of the chemicals in synthetic fragrances are derived from petrochemicals. These chemicals include: benzene derivatives, aldehydes, phthalates, and a slew of other known toxins that are capable of causing cancer, birth defects, nervous-system disorders and allergies—some of which are even cited on the EPA’s hazardous waste list. Sadly, many of these fragrances are neurotoxins designed to numb the nerves in your nose to masking the unpleasant smell of the chemical formulation.
“The whole idea of less is more, that people shouldn’t be slaves to dozens of dangerous, toxic and unsafe cleaning products laced with that “clean smell,” is what I believe,” she says. She has pared down her own cleaning kit to just a few items some of which don't require any chemicals and all of which are fragrance free.
The cleaners come concentrate that are easily mixed with tap water to generate perfectly mixed ready-to-use cleaner. There’s a suite of basic, environmentally friendly cleaners, including a disinfectant, that are fragrance free, non-toxic, and biodegradable and made from renewable resources. Prices range from just 37¢ to $4.45 per quart depending on the product and how much concentrate you purchase.
The CleansGreen™ tools leverage the new technology of split microfiber to either enhance the cleaners’ ability to work and in some cleaning scenarios work beautifully with only water.
Judging by feedback received from CleansGreen™customers, the chemical-free, fragrance-free approach to cleaning works! No longer is a huge bevy of traditional cleaning products riddled with scent required.
“The biggest cleaning mistake that people make is looking for the cleaning products Mom (and Grandma) used,” she said, “rather than a simplified fragrance-free, and possibly chemical-free, option.”
After growing up in many different states across the country and as a Girl Scout camping and building outdoor skills along the way, she was able to grow to love nature and the environment. At the same time that the first Earth Day kicked off in the 1970’s, she began to pursue her Environmental Engineering degree.
Towards the end of her education she cemented her love for the land when she camped across the country visiting as many National Parks as possible during the US Bicentennial year.
In pursuit of bettering the world, once she completed her degrees, she advanced the environmental programs of several established multi-national, mega-corporations. Throughout the decades she served in this manner she has was recognized nationally and internationally for her contributions.
Meanwhile she began pursuing her entrepreneurial inclinations including providing professional cleaning services. This exposed her to the nastiness of traditional cleaning products, the dangers of the fragrances in those products, and how unhealthy and unfriendly to the environment the cleaning industry is.
About five years ago, she went into the green cleaning products business herself. “I’ve been in the cleaning business for over a decade, the environmental industry for over three decades, and a homemaker for even longer. When I created this line, I created what I would want in my own kit,” she says. “I wanted to do a line that was not about fancy chemicals with fancy packaging, but was about simplification and focusing on fragrance-free cleaners.” The overall effect, she says, is a safe, green clean.
Meet Rae Ann Engineer turned Entrepreneur
Every cleaning products company advocates more chemicals are the answer, a strategy that is anti-planet, anti-us.
Manufacturers of traditional cleaning chemicals try to make our lives easier, but in reality do not. For instance disinfecting wipes. They are easy to use, but are rarely used correctly, hence don't do what they are designed to do, namely disinfect and kill germs. Unfortunately they also create massive amounts of waste. All while damaging our health that results in immediate exposure to the germs we are trying to protect ourselves against and on the longer term horizon resulting from the consequences of chemical exposure.
We have all experienced (or read about) the massive increase of asthma and allergies. Currently 20 million people in the U.S., including 6.1 million children have asthma. This impacts our schools and workplace accounting for 14 million asthma related missed school days each year and $3.2 million in treatment expenses.
Sadly, we know family and friends that have been impacted by cancer. A study by the International Society of Indoor Air Quality and Climate comparing women who work outside the home with those who work inside, found that the women who work at home have a 54% higher risk of developing cancer. The study concluded that this is a direct result of the chemicals in household products.
Let me ask some questions here. Who decided we need all of these “clean smelling” toxic chemicals in our homes anyway? How about celebrating our planet and our health instead? How about being an example for our neighbors and living the dream? Don’t we want to live longer and protect the environment we are in?
I recognize that everyone loves good health and wants to keep it.
The money spent on specialty cleaners keep the cleaning product companies thriving. People go to endless measures in a futile attempt to fool themselves and others. This is a waste of time and money and in many cases, health.
Don't get me wrong. I understand why people do this. I have empathy for the desire to do more in our intense schedules and thus seek price, ease, and convenience. I am someone living in this society. I am all too familiar with what it feels like. I want extra time too. However, I do not believe the way to get that is to grab the ready-made solution. How about taking this viewpoint into our own hands and change our own minds about what is clean and how to get the desired result.
Negative concepts of speed cleaning are make-believe, man-made and invented. We make them true by believing them. When you change your mind, and start living according to your new points of view, you begin changing truth. I am interested in creating a new truth. I believe we can clean and we can retain our health. It's natural.
I'm not looking for the newest chemical. I want a safe, green clean.
Taking joy in living and loving our planet is the best way to ensure future generations can also enjoy our environment. Are you ready to throw away the gazillion traditional and old fashioned cleaners that attempt to hide their chemical odors with carcinogenic fragrances? Aren't we done with all that nonsense?
In no way, shape or form does a chemically-scented fragrance and/or aerosols propelled by butane, propane or other toxins create an indoor environment of fresh air. Chemical "deodorizers" or chemical air "fresheners" only mask other odors. These products do nothing to improve the quality of indoor air, and in fact, can contribute to a host of ailments from headaches, breathing difficulties, high pulse rate, and nausea; to mention a few.
If you were like me, that is equating the smell of Pine-Sol® and bleach to being clean; it is time to reprogram your thinking as I have.
I now know "no smell"(or even better, no chemicals)isclean and safe.
However, I admit that was not always the case. I grew up thinking that the Pine-Sol® and bleach Mom used was clean and thus healthy. We now know that there is little that is further from the truth.
Third Party Certified!
It is hard to know if you are being "greenwashed" with those advertising claims. Short of becoming a chemist yourself, you can still be protected by selecting products that have been third party certified.
Third party certification means that an independent organization has reviewed the manufacturing process of a product and has independently determined that the final product complies with specific standards for safety, quality and performance. This review includes comprehensive formulation/material reviews and testing to ensure it works as claimed. Third party certified products bear the mark on the packaging to help consumers and other buyers make educated purchasing decisions.
CleansGreen™ Cleaning Kits and products include cleaners that have one or more certifications from Green Seal, EcoLogo from UL Laboratories, and/or Design for the Environment (DfE) from the US EPA.
